What is CrossFit?
CrossFit is a workout regimen that was created by Greg Glassman in 2000 and is currently practiced in over 13,000 affiliate gyms across the globe. CrossFit ties together multiple forms of exercise and borrows elements from the following:
High Intensity Interval Training
The key to developing the cardiovascular system without an unacceptable loss of strength, speed, and power – interval training mixes bouts of hard work and rest in timed intervals.
Olympic Weightlifting
This includes the clean and jerk, and the snatch – developing strength, speed and power like no other training modality eliciting a profound neuroendocrine response.
Plyometrics
Also known as jump training or plyos, are exercises in which muscles exert maximum force in short intervals of time, with the goal of increasing power and speed-strength.
PowerLifting
This is a strength sport that consists of three attempts at maximal weight on three lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift and involves a barbell loaded with weight plates.
Gymnastics
Using parallel bars, mats, rings, pull-up/dip bars, and climbing rope, the aim is body control. Within this realm we can develop extraordinary strength, flexibility, coordination and balance.
Calisthenics
Essentially, bodyweight exercises, this is a form of exercise consisting of a variety of motor movements, often performed rhythmically and with minimal equipment.
Strongman
This sport involves specific training to pick up large, sometimes physically awkward, heavy objects and move them either through heavy/weighted walks, carries or lifts.
