What is Yoga?
Yoga has far reaching origins in India, but has only gained popularity in the West in more recent years. While there are many different schools of thought and styles of Yoga taught throughout the world. Our Yoga classes emphasize deep active stretching that targets primary muscle groups surrounding the hips, hamstrings and upper back. Focused stretching allows muscles to relax and lengthen, reducing strain on the skeletal system and relieving tension throughout the body. Classes are intended to improve flexibility, alignment and joint mobility and are accessible to all – athletes, advanced practitioners, weekend warriors, first time yoga students and everyone in between. Neither experience nor flexibility are required!
Each class begins with a series of warm-up movements that prepare the muscles to for deeper stretching and improve range of motion. Most poses are performed on the floor and are held for 1-2 minutes. Holding poses for longer periods and focusing on breath gives the body time to fully relax and open. Students who regularly participate in deep stretch yoga classes report fewer injuries and improved sleep.
This style of yoga, deep stretch yoga, is highly recommended for folks who do a lot of weight training, endurance sports, and repetitive motion sports like golf and baseball that unevenly load the body.
